Much has been made of Angie Nixon's shocking win in last week's Democratic Senate primary in the Sunshine State. Nixon (pictured above protesting a redistricting vote), who recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America, has also touted the support of far-left figures such as Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar.
Both Tlaib and Omar actively joined Nixon on the campaign trail and provided high-profile structural, political, and financial validation that helped propel Nixon to her primary victory.
"Thank you to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar for her endorsement," Nixon stated upon receiving Omar's official backing, which coincided with Nixon's renewed policy pushes for Medicare for All and guaranteed childcare. "We are fighting for a future where working families are front and center in policy making."
Tlaib's campaign account directly backed Nixon's "Angie for America" committee with a $5,000 contribution.
"I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of Congresswoman @rashidatlaib," Nixon said in a public campaign statement. "Congresswoman Tlaib's unwavering commitment to the fight for working families and her refusal to back down no matter the circumstance is exactly the type of fighter we need," Nixon shared in a public campaign statement.
"I think the Left has to ask themselves the question: how can someone this radical and so far off the cliff find a home amongst them?" poses Terris Todd, who was appointed by the Trump White House in 2020 and now serves as director of outreach and coalitions for the Project 21 black leadership network.
He also questions whether socialism appeals to the black community.
"If this is what they're asking for, or if this is someone who obviously excites them, they have to ask also and beware that the same policies that she's suggesting, not most black Americans agree with themselves, like defunding the police, no voter ID, no ID to show proof that you are even a citizen in voting in our elections," he notes. "That's a bunch of nonsense."
While he does not think there should be any excitement there, Todd also recognizes that socialist policies have been creeping into many black communities in inner cities for decades.
Meanwhile, polls have Moody leading Nixon by nearly 10 points.
Since Republican Ron DeSantis became governor, his party has gained nearly 2 million registered voters on Democrats in the state that famously decided the 2000 presidential election by 537 votes. The outcome of the statewide races in Florida this November, such as those for governor and U.S. senator, are therefore not in much doubt, which means Nixon defeating Republican incumbent Ashley Moody may be a tall order.
Conservatives believe her record as Florida's attorney general, strong law enforcement backing, and substantial fundraising advantage heavily strengthen her campaign.
