A pro-life leader disputes the claim that chemical abortions are safe.

The most common medication abortion regimen involves taking two pills – mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone needed to support a pregnancy; misoprostol causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus.

Planned Parenthood describes it as "a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy," but National Right to Life President Carol Tobias points out that a woman with an ectopic pregnancy could die if she has not gotten any kind of physical exam or medical help prior to taking the pills.

If a woman with a regular pregnancy proceeds with a medical abortion, then the baby may come out "in horrible ways."

"It might be in her toilet, in her shower," the pro-lifer poses. "She is going to see that little forming body, that already formed body. I think many women have emotional and psychological or mental complications arising from seeing that little baby."

Severe infections are also a risk if the child's remains are not completely expelled.

"Sepsis can set in, a serious infection which can lead to multiple other complications," adds Tobias. "This just isn't safe, and what is so frustrating is that the abortion industry will tell women, 'If you take the pill and you're having complications, go to the emergency room and tell them you had a miscarriage.'"

That, she says, makes it difficult to get information about why a woman is in the ER, what kind of treatment she needs, and what was the cause of her visit.

"In the United Kingdom, when they started mailing abortion pills into homes like is happening now in the United States, in some places of the country, the calls to emergency rooms and calls for an ambulance more than doubled," Tobias relays. "That's not a coincidence."

She reiterates that chemical abortion is "not as safe as people are being told."
