AZ voters warned about choosing 'unrestricted' abortion on Nov. ballot

AZ voters warned about choosing 'unrestricted' abortion on Nov. ballot

With the election just two weeks away, pro-lifers in Arizona are using the remaining days to plead with voters to choose “no” on their ballots.

The initiative is the "Right to Abortion Initiative" or Arizona Proposition 139.

A "yes" vote would make abortion a constitutional right in Arizona, where abortion is already legal through 15 weeks of pregnancy.

Cathi Herrod, of Center for Arizona Policy, told the "Washington Watch" program passage of Prop 139 would eliminate several pro-life laws on the books.

"Basically, it would wipe out any laws that provide for women's health and safety, that allow parental consent, that require a doctor oversees the health care of the woman, or even give her information about whether or not to have the abortion," said Herrod. "So it's a very radical amendment in our state constitution."

By altering the Arizona constitution, she further warned, the state would fall under “unrestricted, unregulated” abortion that is off limits to the state legislature and future state laws.

As written, the measure also protects anyone who helps a woman get an abortion.

“So that's the sex abuser, that's the human trafficker, who is going to coerce the women into having an abortion,” Herrod warned. “It totally lets them off the hook."
