A pro-life state is taking additional steps to protect women who choose abortion.

While Wyoming's pro-life law is tied up in court, the legislature wanted to do more for the sake of patient safety. With that in mind, Senator Brian Boner (R) carried HB0148, a bill that requires abortion clinics to meet certain standards.

"There's just been a huge gap in basic safety and regulation when it comes to abortion centers, and so that's what the bill does," he tells AFN. "It makes it similar to other similarly situated facilities so the state of Wyoming can just provide for some basic patient safety."

In short, abortion clinics will be held to the same standards as other surgical facilities.

And with the advent of chemical abortions, the legislature saw fit to deal with another danger.

"There is also a provision that we added on throughout the legislative process that requires ultrasounds for chemical abortions to ensure that those procedures are safe and that they're being done in a competent manner," Boner details.

Chemical abortions are only approved up to 10 weeks, but they can be fatal for a woman with an ectopic pregnancy; a sonogram is the only way to detect that.

The bill has passed in both legislative chambers and has been sent to Governor Mark Gordon (R) for his signature.
