Citizen mandate triumphs over assisted suicide again

A defender of life is grateful that legislators in Maryland listened to their constituents this session.

Laura Bogley of Maryland Right to Life says assisted suicide has been introduced and defeated nine times over a dozen years in the state.

This time, 18,000 residents sent letters and 500+ made phone calls urging members of the legislature to vote no on the latest bill, and proponents could not defend the many flaws of their deadly legislation that put the elderly, disabled, veterans, and poor at risk.

"The Democrat bill sponsors expressed disappointment in the bill's defeat," the pro-lifer notes. "They refused to accept that our defeat through citizen campaigns of the bill nine different times is actually a citizen mandate against assisted suicide as a policy in our state."

Although the session is not over yet, proponents have conceded defeat this year, and Bogley does not think a new assisted suicide measure is likely for the 2025 session.

"Unfortunately, the proponents, the lobbyists who are seeking this really have infused some cash into Maryland to try to get this enacted," she reports. "So far, the proponents have been appeased by their legislators who've agreed to support them at least getting the bill introduced year over year."

Bogley says they consistently refuse to get the point.
