A constitutional amendment that enshrines abortion up until birth is the goal of abortion supporters in The Sunshine State, where abortion is strongly restricted. Such a win in red-state Florida would come after a similar victory in red-state Ohio, where pro-lifers were outspent by their opponents.
If approved by Florida voters, the proposed “Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion” would undo abortion bans signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis. The groups behind the push include Planned Parenthood and the ACLU.
Lynda Bell of Florida Right to Life tells AFN pro-lifers are fighting deception and even “outright lies” by the other side.
“Just the wording of this initiative is deceptive,” she warns. “It violates the single-subject rule when it says for the ‘life or the health’ of the mother.”
The single-subject rule is a legal term, often applied in bills and legislation, that refers to using precise terms and meanings.
The vague language of the ballot initiative is being challenged by Ashley Moody, Florida’s attorney general, who filed a brief with the Florida Supreme Court to challenge it over the vague wording. In particular, she took issue with the words “viability,” “health,” and “healthcare provider.”
