Pro-life group watched media stampede over controversial bill

A pro-life group in South Carolina is calling out the media for ignoring a pro-life bill it supports but publicize a wildly controversial bill that has no chance of passing in the legislature.

House Bill 3549, an amendment to the South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act, defines “person” to include an unborn child hence the mother would be guilt of murder under state law. The bill would even allow the death penalty so it is garnering nationwide attention.

Holly Gatlin, speaking for South Carolina Citizens for Life, says the pro-life group opposes the legislation for targeting women and she predicts it has no chance of passing.

Meanwhile, Gatlin and Citizens for Life held a press conference urging state senators to support pro-life legislation that passed in the House, the Human Life Protection Act. There was little media interest in that bill, she complains, because of headline-making House Bill 3549.

“And so to ignore our press conference,” she says, “and cover that particular bill that's not a pro-life bill, it's just disgraceful.”
