Because The Cornhusker State is basically a pro-life state, Sandy Danek of Nebraska Right to Life says one would think the proposed heartbeat legislation would be a shoo-in. But there are at least three Democrats who are very vocal about their opposition to protecting preborn babies whose heartbeats can be detected.
"It is difficult for these people to understand why that is a necessary piece of legislation for us to support because they are so driven by the right to abortion that they can't see the humanity of the child in the womb," Danek submits. "What is most disturbing to me is these are women who have children of their own."
One of them, Senator Machaela Cavanaugh, has threatened to filibuster every bill on every subject until and unless all proposals that aim to save the lives of preborn babies are withdrawn.
"Senators are not necessarily respectful of her methods," the pro-lifer relays. "Abortion is so important to her [that] if you can't support her efforts of abortion on demand for whatever reason, at any time, then you're a terrible person, and she's not going to do anything to help you."
The only way to break the filibuster is through a 2/3rds vote. While that is not an impossible feat, Danek admits it will be close.
As committed as Sen. Cavanaugh is to seeing to the deaths of children in the womb, a group of pro-life activists is facing charges for their commitment to saving them.
Last year, with Proverbs 24:11 in mind, 10 members of Red Rose Rescue entered Northland Family Planning, a child termination center in Southfield, Michigan, and handed out red roses to women waiting for abortions, encouraging them to not abort their babies. They were soon "violently" arrested.
Ministry spokeswoman Monica Miller says last week, the pro-life counselors were found guilty of trespassing and resisting arrest.
"We go into these rescues with the mind of Christ," she tells AFN. "Everything we do is motivated from trying to imitate our Lord in His love and His charity and His sacrifice."
The pro-lifers will be sentenced later this month and could face up to 90 days in jail, a fine, community service, or probation.
"The thing is, we don't pay fines, and we will not do community service," Miller asserts. "We're not guilty of committing any wrong, and we will not cooperate with those sentences. We'll tell the judge as politely as we can, 'We decline paying that fine or doing the community service.' We already did the community a service when we did the rescue."
Proverbs 24:11 says, "Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter."
