A legal standoff is happening after the City of New Orleans refused to abide by and enforce the state’s pro-life laws. To punish the municipality, the state government is withholding $59 million to improve the city’s water supply system.
Angie Thomas, of Louisiana Right to Life, tells AFN the pro-life group works in New Orleans where it is true the infrastructure funds are badly needed.
“We want these things that our city so desperately needs,” she says, “but it's just so sad that the leadership of the City of New Orleans is prioritizing killing babies over infrastructure help.”
Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry has said he is not bluffing about withholding the funds until New Orleans gives up on the idea of being a “sanctuary city” for abortion.
Thomas says Louisiana voters overwhelmingly approved a pro-life amendment in 2020, which was approved with 62% of the vote. That vote reflects the beliefs of most people in the state, she says.
