Rep. Nancy Tate, the sponsor of the bill, tells AFN the first provision of the bill requires parents to be informed if their minor daughter is seeking an abortion. Under state law the daughter is permitted to seek a court ruling to bypass a parent but the allowance to do so is tightened in Tate’s legislation.
“This measure states that a physician must exert measures to ensure that the parents of the minors seeking an abortion are consulted,” the state lawmaker explains. "And so judicial bypass raises the standards of who meets the merit to obtain a judicial bypass if the parents or legal guardian are not available to be consulted.”
Another provision stops abortions at 15 weeks into the pregnancy if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe vs Wade.
Chemical abortions will also be restricted and cannot be shipped through the mail, and obtaining the controversial drug requires a doctor’s visit and exam.
If Gov. Andy Beshear vetoes the measure, Tate says she is confident there are enough pro-life votes to override a veto.
Tate, who is of the Catholic faith, represents the state's 27th District. She has served in the state House of Representatives since 2019.
