Trudeau is slumping badly in public opinion polls because voters are angry about inflation, which is killing them with groceries and housing costs much like their American neighbors to the south. Recent polls have shown the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, ahead by 10 to 15 points and gaining ground nearly everywhere.
Trudeau is also ending the year after being embroiled in international scandals. China is accused of working to help Trudeau and his Liberal Party in two election cycles, in 2019 and 2021, and the prime minister accused India of being involved in the assassination of a Sikh activist in Vancouver.
In a Nov. 2 radio interview, Liberal Party member Percy Downe said “many members” of the caucus are concerned about Trudeau and want change. They are afraid to speak out, he insisted, for fear Trudeau will use his power to punish them.
Trudeau may not have to face voters until 2025 thanks to a power-sharing deal with the left-wing New Democratic Party or NDP.
Watching that political alignment, longtime conservative activist Brian Rushfeldt tells AFN it appears the NDP will protect Trudeau for now.
“I think the NDP and the Liberals are so aligned on so many issues that there's no way that the NDP is going to help take them down,” he says. “I'd hoped it would, but I'm starting to see the real NDP ideology come out and it's too in line with the Liberals."
