Project 21: 'Uncle Cameron' ad suggests Democrats fear GOP candidate

A conservative black activist is calling attention to a controversial political ad criticizing Daniel Cameron, the black Republican candidate for Kentucky governor.

Cameron, who is currently the Kentucky attorney general, is attempting to wrestle the governor’s office from Democrat incumbent Andy Beshear.

A new poll shows a dead heat on the eve of Election Day.

In past weeks a far-left political action committee, Black Voters Matter Action PAC, aired the radio ad that claims Cameron “refused to seek justice” for Breonna Taylor. Taylor was fatally shot in 2020 by Louisville police officers during a shootout with her boyfriend, a suspected drug dealer, when officers entered their apartment with a search warrant.

The racially-tinged ad calls the GOP candidate “Uncle Cameron,” a disparaging reference to “Uncle Tom,” and accuses Cameron of betraying blacks. “All skin folk ain't kinfolk,” a black woman, referring to Cameron, complains in the ad.

Cooper, Horace (Project 21) Cooper

Cameron called Taylor’s death a “tragedy” at the time and presented a case against the police officers to a grand jury. The jurors ultimately decided not to charge the police officers but three of them complained they were “misled” by prosecutors.

Horace Cooper of Project 21 says it appears Democrats view Cameron as a political threat in the governor’s race. Even if he doesn't win the race, Cooper says, there is no justification for calling a black candidate an “Uncle Tom” in a political ad.

“It appears that the rules are it's okay for them but not for us,” he says. “This is an amazing set of hypocrisy and bigotry.”

A poll by Emerson College shows the two candidates tied 47%-47% with 4% of voters undecided.
