As previously reported on AFN, Virginia candidate Susanna Gibson has created a political firestorm in an otherwise little-known race for a House of Delegates seat. That’s because the Democrat made pornographic videos with her husband to raise money online but criticized Republicans when her shameful stunt made national news.
Gibson has accused her critics of committing a "sex crime" against her and her family by sharing them, but The Washington Post reported the candidate set up an account on a website where viewers could watch her perform live sex acts. She also asked viewers for "tips," the Post said.
Gibson has also called sharing the videos "revenge porn" against her, which is illegal under Virginia law if true, and she has called that an "illegal invasion of my privacy designed to humiliate me and my family.”
Robert Knight, a columnist for The Washington Times, points out “revenge porn” refers to people who make explicit content then release it to embarrass that person.
“But there's nothing private about this. She's making money, doing sex on the Internet, and asking for money. This is actually a form of prostitution,” he says. “So she's got a lot of nerve to accuse the Republicans of committing a sex crime when she's the one actually carrying them out."
Before the public learned about her videos, Gibson won the Democrat primary in June. She is facing Republican candidate David Owen over who will represent District 57, a redrawn district in Goochland County with no current incumbent.
Republicans currently have a narrow four-seat majority in the Virginia House of Delegates.
As if the situation can’t be any worse, Knight says it’s sickening that some people are making excuses for Gibson because she is making the lurid videos with her husband – as if that makes it better.
“This is glaring evidence of how far the country has sunk morally,” he concludes.
