Democrats watching Hispanic voters abandon party for 'racist' GOP

With a presidential election approaching in a year and a half, the Democratic Party plans to spend millions of dollars to woo Hispanic voters but a Hispanic pastor predicts the political party has moved far beyond what many of those voters support.

Hispanic Americans appear to be migrating to the Republican Party in sizeable numbers. Since 2018, Republican support among Latinos has increased by about ten points, according to an Axios story about Democrats preparing for the 2024 election.

In the 2022 midterms, Republicans got approximately 39% of the Hispanic vote despite Democrats claiming the GOP is a racist party that hates minorities, including immigrants.

Pastor Samuel Rodriguez, who leads the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, laughed after learning the Democratic National Committee is committing millions.

“Good luck with that,” he says. “No, it's not going to work. It can't work because the Democratic party is no longer the party of Obama in 2008 or Bill Clinton in the 1990s. This is an unrecognizable Democratic Party.”

According to the Axios story, President Biden is hoping to woo Hispanic voters thanks to his re-election campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez. She is the granddaughter of Cesar Chavez, the late Mexican-American farm labor leader, who ironically opposed illegal immigration because they drove down wages and were hired as strike breakers.

Even though illegal immigration was a winning issue for Donald Trump, Rodriguez used a close friendship with the former president to counsel him on a softened policy on immigration. Rodriguez, who prayed at Trump’s inauguration, urged him to strike a balance that protected the U.S. border but recognized that millions of hard-working Hispanic families are living in the U.S.

According to Pastor Rodriguez, the Democratic Party sees future voters pouring into the U.S. from Central America and South America, which is why the party supports the porous border, but he believes that plan is backfiring on the politicians who are allowing it.

“All of a sudden they discover these Hispanics that are coming across the border, legally or illegally,” he observes, “they happen to love Jesus and they happen to have traditional values.”
