In what might be a new level of political mastery, Gov. Ron DeSantis sent approximately 50 illegal immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard last week, where he wanted the wealthy Democrat enclave to get a small taste of the humanitarian crisis border states are experiencing thanks to the Biden administration.
In a statement, the Florida governor confirmed two planes of illegal immigrants were sent to Martha’s Vineyard through Florida’s relocation program, which he said exists to send them to “sanctuary destinations" that don't include The Sunshine State.
“States like Massachusetts, New York and California will better facilitate the care of these individuals who they have invited into our country by incentivizing illegal immigration,” a spokesman for Gov. DeSantis said, “through their designation as ‘sanctuary states’ and support for the Biden administration’s open border policies.”
That accusation is just not hyperbole: Those Democrat-run cities have literally bragged they are “sanctuaries” for “immigrants,” and therefore they refuse to cooperate with federal immigration agents so they're not deported.
To test those claims, since early summer chartered buses have been dropping off those illegal immigrants in blue states after departing states such as Texas and Arizona, which have been overrun with illegals for decades. This year, an estimated two million illegal aliens are expected to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. Most will likely remain, and never get deported, thanks to the open-border policy of the Biden administration.
Last week, the wealthy residents of Martha’s Vineyard fed the 50 Venezuelans breakfast cereal, then sent them on buses to a military base after they slept overnight in a church.
At about the same time Martha's Vineyard was breaking out Apple Jacks and Cocoa Krispies to feed the visitors, busloads of illegal aliens were pulling up to Vice President Kamala Harris’ official residence in Washington, D.C. Those illegal immigrants were sent from Texas courtesy of Gov. Greg Abbott.
"We're sending migrants to her backyard to call on the Biden Administration to do its job & secure the border," Gov. Abbott stated in a social media post.
Unhappy with the open mockery of their left-wing views, Democrats and the Far Left have been predictably angry and outraged. President Joe Biden accused Republicans of “playing politics with human beings,” and everyone from state lawmakers to an ACLU attorney accused Gov. DeSantis of coercing the illegal aliens to get on the chartered flight to Massachusetts.
California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, possibly outdid them all by asking the U.S. Dept. of Justice to investigate Gov. DeSantis for kidnapping the foreigners. “Several of the individuals who were transported to Martha’s Vineyard,” Newsom’s letter states, “have alleged that a recruiter induced them to accept the offer of travel based on false representations that they would be transported to Boston and would receive expedited access to work authorization.”
Newsom's plan to sic the DOJ on DeSantis, which is entirely possible in the current political climate, is still questionable. The chartered flights that landed in Martha’s Vineyard actually took off from San Antonio, Texas, on the morning of Sept. 14. The flights stopped briefly in Florida – likely to qualify for the “relocation” funding - then departed there for Massachusetts and its beautiful, charming island, where public signs proclaim the island welcomes immigrants and refugees.
Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, says the kidnapping allegations are nonsense because the illegal aliens willingly signed papers to be transported to a new community.
“Now you could maybe say, well, they don't know everything they're getting into or whatever it is,” he allows. “Okay, but that's not kidnapping. The fact is nobody is being sent to these places involuntarily. That's what kidnapping would be."
