Last week, former Obama advisor David Axelrod expressed concerns on CNN that President Biden "doesn't have great answers" when it comes to issues like inflation, gas prices, and abortion. For example, Biden has said because of the Supreme Court's ruling last month that overturned Roe v. Wade, he's now in favor of doing away with the filibuster in the Senate – which pundits say is unlikely to happen.
Axelrod also has expressed concerns about the president's desire to run for re-election in 2024, considering he would be 82 years old at the beginning of a second term.
"There is this sense that things are kind of out of control and he's not in command," said Axelrod. "And this [inability to end the Senate filibuster] lends to that."
Now there are whispers that some Democrats who are concerned with Biden's sinking poll numbers might opt for someone else. One name that has been floating around is California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Rob Chambers, vice president of AFA Action, predicts Newsom's fellow Democrats wouldn't be keen on how he handled the pandemic in the Golden State, which included vaccine mandates, shutting down schools and businesses, and requiring masks.
"I think that is what is going to prevent Gavin Newsom from getting anywhere close to [becoming] president of the United States," Chambers tells AFN. "I don't see it happening."
And while there are rumblings about a potential return of 2016 failed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, Chambers doesn't see that happening as well.
"I think Democrats probably view her as [someone carrying a lot of] 'baggage,'" he offers. "And there are factors there between the Obamas and the Clintons. I just don't think the Democratic establishment apparatus is going to be really pushing Hillary."
Chambers adds that he doesn't see any Democrat who can win in 2024. In fact, he contends that barring major changes, any Democratic nominee will be saddled with Joe Biden's record.
