Republican Governor Greg Abbott is seeking re-election for a third term in 2022. O'Rourke, a former U.S. Democratic congressman, has announced he would run in hopes to challenging Abbott, who has angered many in his own party for decisions he made regarding the pandemic.
Cathie Adams is a former chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. Abbott, she admits, has made "some major errors" while in office.
"I think taking $300 million out of the bank to set up a tracking for those who have COVID was a big mistake. I think a mask mandate was a big mistake," she offers as examples.
Abbott is set to face at least six challengers in the March 1 Republican primary. A couple of them, says Adams, could present a formidable challenge to the incumbent governor.
"I think that candidates like Don Huffines, a former state senator who did a fine job in that position, has a very, very serious campaign," she shares with AFN. "I think that Allen West as a former congressman in Florida came here with rave reviews."
Like Adams, West is a former chair of the Texas Republican Party, having resigned that position in June.
But whether it's Abbott, Huffines, West, or someone else, Adams is pretty confident which party will come out on top on November 8, 2022.
"I do not think that it is going to be Robert Francis O'Rourke or any Democrat who wants to open our border and chooses to destroy our economy by keeping new oil in the ground," she states. "This is the Democrat agenda – and that is not the Texas economy."
