Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas appeared Tuesday in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he was either smugly defiant or incredibly ignorant, or both, depending on the question asked and the topic that was raised.
“GOP leaders unleash on DHS Secretary Mayorkas,” a Fox News headline summarized the heated questions from GOP senators, such as Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, who bluntly told Mayorkas he is an incompetent failure who should step down in disgrace.
In his exchange with Mayorkas, Sen. Cruz pointed to a photo of wristbands on an easel behind him.
“What are these wrist bands?” Cruz asked, pointing to the cartel-supplied wristbands illegal aliens wear to document the payment they owe for a passage onto American soil.
“I don't know what they are,” Mayorkas replied.
“You don't know what they are?” Cruz, appearing to be honestly astonished, pushed back.
Elsewhere in that exchange, Cruz told Mayorkas the Border Patrol agents “despise” him because he is willing to “let children be raped to follow political orders.”
In a less-heated exchange, Sen. John Cornyn described the common practice of drug cartels sending illegal immigrants across the border to distract Border Patrol agents. While those illegals are being chased down and arrested, the cartels sneak drugs across in another area.
“I am not aware of that as a strategy,” Mayorkas said.
“Here’s what I learned today,” Sen. John Kennedy, the Louisiana Republican, summarized in a Fox News interview. “I learned today that either Secretary Mayorkas believes in completely open borders or he is not qualified to manage Chuck E. Cheese.”
Ira Mehlman, with the Federation for American Immigration Reform, or FAIR, called the blistering attack on Mayorkas “well deserved” because he is overseeing a policy that has proved disastrous for the country. It is also terrible, he says, for the illegal aliens who exploit it.
“People who have been lured to the border, who are brought here by criminal organizations,” Mehlman says, “none of this works for the benefit of anybody except the few political ideologues that Mayorkas seems to represent.”
