There have already been calls for the firing of Alejandro Mayorkas, who leads the Department of Homeland Security and who claims the U.S.-Mexico border is secure, but now Customs and Border Protection leader Chris Magnus is coming under fire, too.
According to a Politico story, five current administration officials are slamming Magnus for a variety of failures, from failing to show up at vital White House meetings to obsessing over the CBP’s reputation instead of understanding the basic duties and responsibilities of the agency.
Magnus, a former police chief, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate late last year in a narrow vote, the story said.
“He was unqualified for the job right from the get-go,” complains Ira Mehlman of the Federation for Immigration Reform. “He was on record as opposing the kind of law enforcement that Customs and Border Patrol carry out, and yet President Biden appointed him to this position.”
In the Politico story, Magnus was allowed to respond to his critics. He patted himself on the back for questioning the “status quo” and insisted the biggest complaint against him is that he asks lots of questions in meetings.
