Citing the ongoing pandemic, the Biden administration has announced that it has extended the suspension of student loan payments through August 31. Last month, the federal mask mandate on airplanes, trains, buses, and other public transportation was extended, also citing the ongoing pandemic. Toddlers must also continue wearing masks in some places.
But Biden plans to end the Title 42 public health order related to COVID next month.
"The Centers for Disease Control has said that at least for now, the pandemic is not as severe as it has been," notes Ira Mehlman, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). "The Biden administration has used this as an excuse to end any kind of enforcement at the border; the last remaining portion of that was Title 42."
Meanwhile, they are maintaining provisions related to the pandemic.
"On this matter, one that's perhaps the most important to the American people, they've chosen to lift it as of May 23, in spite of the fact that their own Department of Homeland Security says we could see a million come across that border in the first six weeks after Title 42 is gone," Mehlman relays.
He concludes that the administration "seized" on the pandemic "opportunistically to do something that they wanted to do all along."
