Taylor and Mark Davis were looking forward to the birth of their twins, Avery and Emersyn, but not for it to happen at 21 weeks and three days, when Taylor went into labor.
Because micro preemies are difficult to save, doctors told the couple their babies were not viable. Taylor was hospitalized and instructed to lie face down, which she did for six days to keep the girls in the womb longer. But at 22 weeks, she delivered the first twin, who weighed just one pound.
"I cried the whole time," Taylor Davis recently told WINK News in Fort Myers, Florida. "I wasn't crying like happiness; I was crying in fear of are they going to be able to save her?"
Three days later, the second child (weighing one pound, one ounce) was delivered by emergency C-section. Though it is difficult to save children who are born so early, it is not impossible. So the Davises placed their faith God as well as in the nurses and doctors at Golisano Children's Hospital.
"The nurses and the doctors, they just kept on saying this: 'This is a miracle,'" Mrs. Davis accounts.
After spending 137 days in the hospital, the Davises were cleared to take home their babies, who now weigh about seven pounds apiece.
