Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) has introduced the Protecting Our Kids from Harmful Research Act to prohibit use of federal dollars for gender reassignment research on minors. That includes using puberty blockers and surgery to change gender, which is impossible anyway.
Sen. Lee has said of the bill, "The federal government should never fund research that harms kids. This bill will protect taxpayers from funding spurious research, but more importantly, it will protect kids from the permanent damage this irresponsible research can produce."
Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH) says the proposal ought to have bipartisan support.
"If Democrats were not ruled by ideology, which they are right now, they would step up and support this," LaBarbera submits. "These surgeries and these radical hormone therapies, which actually aim to stunt puberty, are being pushed on children by powerful medical institutions, well-funded medical institutions [and] activists."
After learning of the damage they cause, several countries in Europe have begun placing serious limits on the practice on minors.
"Why do we allow this," LaBarbera wonders. "What's happened is the Democratic Party is now the party of LGBTQ and abortion, and they are totally in lockstep with the radical LGBTQ activists."
That, the AFTAH president concludes, means Americans cannot depend on politicians to do the right thing, so it is time for parents to become activists on their own and to see to it that politicians make the right move for their children.
Sen. Lee is joined by Senators Mike Braun (R-IN), James Lankford (R-OK), and Roger Wicker (R-MS) as cosponsors.
