The mainstream media leapt for joy late last week at the announcement that Donald Trump had been indicted by a New York grand jury. Liberals have been gunning for him since he came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower in 2015, so the reaction on Friday of late-night host Stephen Colbert and his audience that "Teflon Don" had been indicted wasn't exactly surprising:
Colbert: "Just a little something we're celebrating today, because literally three minutes before I walked out on this stage here, the New York Times reported a New York grand jury voted to indict former President Donald J. Trump." [Followed by raucous applause]
Curtis Houck of Media Research Center says similar energy was in almost every mainstream media news outlet when they made the announcement. "Other than the birth of their children, I would bet that this is one of the greatest days in the lives of a lot of these liberal journalists," he tells AFN.
The cheering might not be over, depending on how the arraignment and trial go – but Houck says it won't just be liberals who are celebrating.
"In the interest of fairness, it is worth pointing out that the idea of [the former president] being in handcuffs and there being a perp walk or a mug shot being released – this is something that Donald Trump wants as well," the MRC spokesman claims. "He wants the attention."
And Houck suggests the mainstream media and liberals might not get the last cheer. He predicts the case will be a "huge boost" to Trump's presidential campaign.
"This is going to push people into Donald Trump's arms – and the media are fine with this because they want Donald Trump to be the nominee," he concludes.
Trump arrived in New York Monday afternoon. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, and then expected to return to his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida the same day.
