Landlords across the U.S. have been on the news talking about situations involving squatters – people living on a piece of property without a title, right, or lease. Governor DeSantis has signed a bill eliminating squatters' "rights" in Florida, saying it's coming to a stop in his state.
Under HB 621, a property owner can request law enforcement to immediately remove a squatter under certain conditions, thereby avoiding delays, litigation, and missed rents. The bill also establishes harsh penalties for those engaged in squatting, encouraging squatting, and teaching others the scam.
"[President Joe] Biden has allowed millions of illegal immigrants to flood across the border," said Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody in a press release. "After video evidence of their plan to take over homes emerged, we're ensuring Floridians are protected from this egregious and brazen scheme."

"I'm very grateful … that Governor DeSantis is not allowing this myth of squatters' rights to impact Florida," says Ellis. "This is a perfect example of state sovereignty – and regardless of the insanity from the federal government or what other states are doing, Governor DeSantis is protecting Florida citizens."
Ellis argues the term "squatters' rights" is akin to saying "robber's rights."
"This is a communist, Marxist-implicit phenomenon and theory; and this is what the Left is trying to advance in the culture, and genuinely trying to affect real property rights of American citizens," says Ellis.
She adds that regardless of one's political affiliation, property rights are something that most people understand are in the Bill of Rights to be secure in our persons, property, or effects.
"For Governor DeSantis to stand up and say we're not going to put up with this in Florida is absolutely the right call – and every single other red state governor should follow suit," she urges.
