In March 2022, grassroots activists intercepted a box containing 115 aborted children outside of Cesare Santangelo's Washington Surgi-Center in Foggy Bottom, D.C. The box was given to them by a whistleblower working for Curtis Bay Medical Waste Services, and the injuries observed on five nearly full-term babies recovered from the box suggest that they were aborted with federally illegal methods or left to die after being born alive.
"These babies show very distinct signs of being aborted in violation of federal law, specifically the Born Alive Infant Protection Act and the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban," details Caroline Smith, head of the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU), the organization that intercepted the box.
She says Santangelo has never been charged.
"In addition, these babies are evidence in the recent case in D.C. with the defendants who were convicted of violating the FACE Act at this same abortion clinic," Smith adds.
At the time of the discovery, the Senate Judiciary Committee issued a letter to Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) demanding preservation of the evidence, but since then, the city of D.C. has stonewalled progress to justice. Now, Biden's Department of Justice has ordered the medical examiner to destroy the evidence, which does not surprise Smith.
"There has been a distinct effort ever since then from the DOJ, from the medical examiner, from the mayor's office, the police department to cover up this evidence, to sweep it under the rug," she laments.
The Thomas More Society is rushing to get a court order to save the remains of the five late-term babies to prove the abortion clinic violated federal law. Congressional Republicans have spoken as well.
Meanwhile, PAAU is demanding an autopsy to ascertain the nature of these deaths, a full investigation into their killer, and a dignified burial for their remains.
