Texas Right to Life is defending itself against 14 separate lawsuits filed by Planned Parenthood and other members of the abortion industry.
John Seago, legislative director of Texas Right to Life, tells American Family News the group is in the crosshairs because it was a main advocate for passing the law.
“And for advertising just basic facts about the bill," he adds, “such as the law permits the public to sue an abortionist, or anyone else, who aids and abets an illegal abortion in the state.
The law bans most abortions once a baby's heartbeat is detected. It also allows the public to help enforce it by making a sneaky abortionist or an abusive boyfriend, for example, liable for breaking the law.
The bill was signed into law in May by Gov. Greg Abbott with little public attention until the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal by abortion groups to strike it down. Abortion supporters went crazy after that decision was announced and have vowed to punish anyone and everyone involved in passing the law.
Until now, Seago says, Texas Right to Life had never been named as a defendant in lawsuits in Texas.
"We have been involved in lawsuits as interveners or adding briefs, helping the Attorney General's office defend pro-life laws,” he advises, “but this is kind of a new angle of attack from the pro-abortion crowd."
Attorneys for Texas Right to Life were successful in getting all the cases bundled, meaning they do not have to track 14 different cases.
