Central Florida noticed for non-literature courses in English dept

A couple of English Department courses at the University of Central Florida caught the attention of a campus watchdog after neither of the courses offer students classical literature.

The story by The College Fix says the class for “Queer Literature” and one for “Honors Video Game Design” are offered to students who would typically read works by Shakespeare, Milton, and Chaucer.

Central Florida, located in Orlando, is home to more than 69,000 students which makes it one of the largest public universities in the U.S.

Matt Lamb, associate editor of The College Fix, says the University should take time to consider if the courses reflect well on the public university.

“And perhaps,” Lamb adds, “Gov. DeSantis and his education department should take a closer look at how taxpayer dollars are being spent.”

Lamb allows the video game course is offered because the university offers a program for video game design, but he says it doesn’t deserve to be listed among English courses.

More tellingly, the Fix story points out the university’s English Department offers only one course for students to study Shakespeare, Milton, and Chaucer, but it offers two courses on the Harry Potter novels.
