Parents weren't amused in mid-December when a Texas educator thought she was being clever and cute by writing a Dr. Seuss-style poem mocking evangelicals opposed to pornographic books in the school library. Fox News reported that Krista Tyler, a former teacher at Grisham Middle School in Austin, read her poem at a Leander ISD school board meeting on December 16:
"Everyone in Leander liked reading a lot,
But some evangelicals in Leander did not.
These kooks hated reading, the whole reading season.
Please don't ask why, no one quite knows the reason.
It could be perhaps critical thinking causes fright.
It could be their heads aren't screwed on just right.
But whatever the reason, their brains or their fright,
They can't follow policy in plain black and white."
Tyler continued:
"These bigots don't get to choose for us, that's clear.
Then how, I am wondering, did we even get here.
They growl at our meetings, all hawing and humming,
'We must stop this indoctrination from coming!'
They've come for the books and the bonds and what for?
Their kids don't even attend Leander schools anymore.
Bring back our books, maintain decorum, good grief.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a meeting in peace?"
AFN contacted Christian author and commentator Janice Shaw Crouse to get her reaction. Crouse says despite today's overly sensitive cancel culture, it's clear that Christians are still vulnerable targets.
"So many of our elites now think that nobody should question them and they shouldn't have anybody whose authority exceeds theirs," says the cultural analyst. "[They think] they get to determine what's taught and the parents have no say-so."
According to Fox, one parent at the meeting commented it is "mind-boggling" that a teacher would have "such disdain" for the people who pay her salary.
Crouse – author of "Children at Risk" – explains that parents have had enough.
"At this point, they're saying: No, you're not going to glorify pedophilia, you're not going to glorify same-sex activity, you're not going to show explicit scenes to my children. This has gone too far."
The books in question at Grisham Middle School – "Lawn Boy" and "Gender Queer: A Memoir" – have also been condemned by school parents nationwide. (See related story)
