Laurie Higgins, a cultural issues writer for the Illinois Family Institute, says all public and charter schools now have to align themselves to the radical standards developed by the Sexual Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS).
"If any school in Illinois teaches personal health and safety -- and that can be anything; that could be first aid -- if they want to teach anything on personal health and safety, they can only use the standards that come out of the National Sex Education Standards," Higgins explains.
She emphasizes that schools either use the standards or teach nothing at all about sexual health. She also advises parents to stay alert.
"They need to look at the legislation," she insists. "They need to pay close attention to what is going on during professional development that their school districts are providing for their staff, faculty, and administrators, because those things that go on during professional development are coming into your classrooms."
The "Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act" (SB 818) has now gone to Governor J.B. Pritzker's (D) desk for his signature.
