To create an "inclusive environment" among its staff, patients, and visitors, Milford Regional Medical Center has announced that it will hold everyone accountable for what the hospital considers "offensive."
Dr. Peter Smulowitz, the chief medical officer, says that ranges from rhetoric to tone of voice, and some examples of unacceptable conduct would be "offensive comments about others' race, ethnicity, accent, religion, gender, sexual orientation or other personal traits; aggressive or intimidating behavior, physical or verbal threats and assaults; sexual or vulgar words or actions; and disrupting another patient's care or experience."
Brian Camenker, president of MassResistance, laments that "the people in these hospitals actually believe this stuff," but in his view, "This is malpractice. It's quackery. It's nonsense."
He is interested to see how this will play out.
"These guys have sort of announced that they're going to be in your face about it, and … people aren't going to like it, aren't all leftists, and so they're going to have problems," Camenker says. "I am sure there will be a backlash against this."
The official website lays out some potential scenarios of how the medical center will respond to infractions, including the denial of non-emergency treatment.
