In an effort to create a completely offense-free zone, city officials in Wauwatosa had banned city employees from displaying anything but "neutral" winter decorations ahead of Christmas. Even the colors of red and/or green were forbidden in the workplace.
In their initial email sent on November 9, City Administrator Jim Archambo and Deputy City Administrator Melissa Cantarero Weiss acknowledged Christmas as a significant holiday but emphasized the need to be "inclusive" and "equitable" to those who do not celebrate it.
A Christian attorney quickly took action.
"Within 24 hours of receiving our demand letter, the city officials backtracked 180 degrees," reports Liberty Counsel's Mat Staver. "They actually sent out another directive, and in that directive, they said that the employees can decorate in the manner that they have historically decorated, and they are free to do so."
Pleased with the response, Staver encourages anyone who encounters a similar misguided attempt for inclusion this Christmas season to take a stand for what is right and legal.
"Had we not gotten involved, this absurd, unconstitutional directive would become a policy and would become a law to all of the employees in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin," he notes. "Fortunately, they can celebrate Christmas, the Grinch has been defeated, and Christmas has now returned to Wauwatosa."
He asserts that Christians are free to celebrate the Christmas holiday consistent with their faith and law.
