Attempting to get better cooperation from one of his players, Coach Mark Adams explains, "I said that in the Bible that Jesus talks about how we all have bosses, and we all are servants. I was quoting the Bible about that."
Matt Lamb, assistant editor of The College Fix, says when word got out, there was an uproar and an investigation. Coach Adams was suspended and then forced to resign.
"Their investigation found it was unintentional; he didn't mean any harm," Lamb relays. "The university claimed that he apologized to the players. Coach Adams … never apologized to the players; he explained what he meant."
Though the player was reportedly "bothered" by being told that everyone submits to higher authorities, Lamb agrees that the coach did not say anything wrong.
"I do think they overreacted," he tells AFN. "Even [the university] said in their final investigation that it was unintentional."
Rumors that Coach Adams had spit on a player in a separate incident were also disproven.
Texas Tech University has agreed to pay Adams $3.9 million, plus a $200,000 retention bonus in a legal settlement that also stipulates that Adams will receive any bonuses he earned this year, including ones for the team's academic performance. As part of the agreement, Adams and Tech will not pursue any action against each other in the future, with each side holding the other blameless.
