The first-annual National Gathering for Prayer and Repentance is set for Wednesday, Feb. 1, in Washington, D.C. It will be held at the Museum of the Bible.
Members of Congress are expected to attend, including Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA). Talking about the event on the “Washington Watch” program, the lawmaker said our country has endured “great challenges” in its history when the nation’s leaders bowed before God and asked for His guidance and His wisdom.
“There are many members here in the United States Congress,” Johnson told show host Tony Perkins, “who recognize that and understand that this is our responsibility, and something we desperately need to do."
On his radio show, Perkins said the United States “is in trouble” because we have turned our backs on God and now we must repent.
“Now I know that sounds foreign in the 21st century but it's true,” Perkins insisted. “God hasn't changed and we still as human beings, as we live in a fallen world, when we fall short of what God has designed for us, and what He expects for us as nations, as individuals we need to turn back to Him. I think that's where we are today.”
