The Mississippi legislature has passed the Pregnancy Resource Act, which provides tax credits for businesses that donate to pregnancy resource centers in The Magnolia State.
Laura Knight of Pro-Life Mississippi says the legislation, now awaiting the signature of Gov. Tate Reeves, provides $3.5 million in tax credits. Businesses that contribute to pregnancy centers can receive up to 50% off their tax liability in the state.
Mississippi is one of the poorest states in the Union, which means the state’s pro-life pregnancy centers are often flooded with women desperate for help and counseling during their pregnancies. At many clinics, ultrasounds and childbirth classes are provided during pregnancy, and diapers, baby formula, and infant clothes are available after birth.
The pregnancy clinics are nonprofits, with no government funding, that depend on monetary donations to operate and purchase medical items and baby items.
“This bill would be a complete game changer for Mississippi pregnancy resource centers,” Knight predicts, “by allowing businesses to make those donations and then creating more awareness in their area that they are there.”
