McFarland welcomes chance to bring God glory

With a documentary about Jerry Falwell Jr.'s sex scandal and fall from grace coming to Hulu, a Christian apologist says, "Bring it on."

In August of 2020, it was revealed that Jerry Falwell Jr, the now former president of Liberty University, and his wife, Becki, were allegedly involved in a salacious affair with a pool boy. Now the former pool attendant, Giancarlo Granda, has shared his story with Hulu for the documentary titled "God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down a Dynasty."

It was Granda's Reuters interview, as well as an Instagram photo scandal, that put Falwell Jr. on an "indefinite leave of absence" from his roles as president and chancellor of Liberty University, leading to his official resignation in August 2020.

Two years later, the world continues to latch on to the hypocrisy, but Liberty University alumnus and AFR talk host Alex McFarland points out that the very real failings of Christian leaders do not negate the gospel of Christ.

"The truth of the gospel is in no way contingent on the behavior of Christians," he asserts. "Even if every Christian were exemplary, Jesus wouldn't be more risen. Even if every Christian fell, Jesus wouldn't be less the Savior."

McFarland sees the upcoming documentary, in which the pool boy is expected to tell all, as an opportunity. He is not surprised to see Hollywood run with the story, noting Dwight Moody's quote that "out of 100 people, one might read the Bible, but 99 will read the Christian."

"I welcome it, really," he says. "If it causes us to clean up our act for God's glory, well, bring it on."
