Bayless bogeys on advice for Scheffler, McFarland says

Sports talk host Skip Bayless, formerly of Fox Sports 1 and now with a YouTube show, has some not-so-wise advice for world-No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler: “Put your career ahead of your family.”

He’s even claiming that's what God would want him to do.

Heading into this year's British Open – a PGA major he eventually won by four strokes -- Scheffler held a press conference where he clearly laid out his priorities in life.

“If my golf ever started affecting my home life or ever affected the relationship I have with my wife, with my son, that's going to be the last day I play out here for a living. I'd much rather be a great father than I would be a great golfer,” Scheffler said.

Scheffler’s wife, Meredith, was also his high school sweetheart. His son, Bennett, was born last year. They’re both shown in The Associated Press photo above as he hugged them fiercely on the 18th green after securing the British Open win, his fourth major championship.

Skip Bayless says he was shocked by that and in a social media post said Scheffler's priorities were backwards.

McFarland, Alex (Christian apologist) McFarland

“You can't just shrug it off at age 29 and focus on, as you said, being a better father than a golfer.”

It's not what God would want.

“You can't do that Scotty. No. God wants you to maximize the platform from which you can honor Him. That's what God has led or called you to do, Scotty. Not to focus on your wife and infant son before you're 30,” Bayless said.

Alex McFarland of Exploring the Word on AFR says he's heard some bad advice in his days, but this might be the worst. He says it's OK to lose at everything except your family.

“It’s not biblical or wise to purposely try to subordinate your marriage, family, morals for ‘a bigger platform,’” McFarland said.
