The Cornwall Alliance began having courses so people will have a deeper understanding of how their faith, science and economics intersect.
The first online course was on Basic Climate Science, which is an introduction to the earth's climate system. It also explains why spending money to “stop” climate change could be doing more harm than good. The course was launched last year on July 7.
The new course is called “Modern Water Management: Systems, Policy, and Human Needs” and went live on March 27 of this year.
Climatologist Dr. David R. Legates is the director of research and education at The Cornwall Alliance.
“The second one (online class) now is based on my upper division water resources class. The idea is you've got water and, coming in the variety of forms, people are using it. And this all really started during COVID. When classes went offline, we had to come up with a solution within about a week.”
He said the course is for anyone interested in water.
“Generally, what I've got are 12 modules, and it goes all the way from the basics of water science and what you would expect from hydrology that you'd need to know about water management. We talk about historical issues of water use and development. We talk, for example, about the history of New York City, the history of Los Angeles, and the history of Boulder, Colorado, and how all three of them have dealt with water needs.”
He said water quality, drinking water and wastewater treatment are among other topics.
The Cornwall Alliance also has a podcast called “Sanity Check,” which is normally hosted by Legates and Dr. E. Calvin Beisner, founder and president of the environmental organization. They have different experts in science, economics, theology, ethics and public policy as guests on the show. The goal is striving “to think biblically about creation care, global warming, and the world’s poor.”
