Ryan Bomberger, co-founder and chief creative officer of The Radiance Foundation, was conceived in rape and subsequently adopted into a loving, diverse family of 15 — 10 of whom were adopted.
Now, he is sharing his story through a new book and documentary titled "Should Have Been Aborted." According to Bomberger, the provocative title came directly from comments made by pro-abortion activists, including a student at Harvard, who argued that the circumstances of his conception stripped him of his worth.
"We all have equal and inherent worth, and thank goodness it's not given to us by man or woman, but by God," Bomberger said during a recent interview on “Washington Watch.”
According to the story description, it is “an intimate look at Ryan’s fascinating childhood, his near fatal struggles, and his life-altering spiritual transformation.” The story also covers his pursuit in finding his birth mother and how he has been a thorn in the side for Planned Parenthood, America Civil Liberties Union and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
While exceptions for cases of rape and incest are often at the center of legislative debates, data from both the Guttmacher Institute and state-level reports show that rape accounts for roughly 1% or less of all abortions in the U.S. For Bomberger, however, the topic is personal rather than theoretical.
In his project, he directly addresses the debate surrounding rape exceptions, arguing that true compassion offers life and support to both the mother and child rather than ending an unborn life.
"My hope is that my life is a testament to the fact that triumph rises from tragedy all the time," Bomberger said. "Even though things are humanly unplanned, God divinely plans things — not that He planned for my birth mom to go through that violence, but what He can do is bring good out of the worst situations."
