Academy record could bite New Jersey Democrat today, ex-Naval officer says

A former Naval service member and New Jersey resident believes Democrat gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill's record at the U.S. Naval Academy will influence the election.

As Election Day has arrived, several polls show the race between Sherrill, shown right above, and Republican Jack Ciattarelli to have narrowed to one point.

While Sherrill touts her military record as a former helicopter pilot, critics continue to criticize her for failing to disclose what she witnessed regarding the massive 1994 cheating scandal while she was a midshipman at Annapolis.

In April 1994, suspicions arose that midshipmen had shared or obtained advance copies of a final exam in Electrical Engineering 310, a required course for juniors.

The test was administered to roughly 650 midshipmen in the Class of 1994.

Investigators discovered that answers or portions of the exam had been circulating beforehand, often through shared computer files or copied material.

Dr. William Devlin is a U.S. Navy veteran and Purple Heart recipient who lived in New Jersey for several years. He believes Sherrill's military record is going to hurt her.

“Yeah, I think people are going to look at that. I mean, everybody in the world knows that she didn't walk on her Naval Academy graduation, that she continues to obfuscate why she didn't walk and say, ‘oh I was protecting others.’ Well, why in the world would you protect cheaters? I mean you're at the top of the game in the U.S. Naval Academy. So, I think she's trying to state, ‘oh I was the hero in that because I protected other people.’ No, you should have all been dismissed as many were."

Devlin says New Jersey needs a breath of fresh air.

"And Jack Ciattarelli is that whether you're a Democrat or Republican. I know that people have been changing their registration, but even those Dems that didn't change to an R, I think they're still going to vote for Jack Ciattarelli. That’s why the polls are saying it's a dead heat. So, we hope and pray that Ciattarelli will become the next governor."
