Several efforts being discussed, but one Florida county acts quickly to honor Kirk

A county in Florida has voted to rename a local road in honor of Charlie Kirk.

The vote in Lake County was 5-0. That's despite efforts by liberals to speak out against the proposal.
Anthony Sabatini is one of the county commissioners and described the situation to American Family Radio (AFR)'s "Jenna Ellis in the Morning" program.

"About 72 hours before the meeting, the local Democratic Party and some of the clubs and organizations in the area put out an alert campaign to start bombarding us with calls and emails and opposition which I think really shocked a lot of people, especially on the commission," said Sabatini. "I thought the debate was going to be what road, what kind of a road do we want to name, but instead, it was a bunch of sort of hateful people from the extreme Left coming out to say that they simply don't want anything named after Charlie Kirk."

One person that confronted Sabatini and other commissioners said such an honor should be left to fallen law enforcement officers such as fallen LCSO Deputy Bradley Link. Sabatini strongly disagreed.

“How dare you use that deputy’s name for your petty political argument, how dare you! How dare you!” Sabatini said in remarks aired by WESH and other local TV news outlets.

There are several other known efforts to honor Kirk in Florida and one in South Carolina.

Like Lake County, there has been opposition.

In Miami-Dade, Florida a bill was filed to designate a portion of State Road 985 near Florida International University as Charlie Kirk Memorial Avenue.

Similar actions are being discussed in Melbourne, Florida, Brevard County Florida and in Laurens City, South Carolina.

An effort in Pensacola, Florida to rename North 65th Avenue near Escambia High School to Charlie Kirk Way was withdrawn after opposition.

'Hey, everybody, come vote'

Sabatini estimates around 80 to 90 people were brought to the Lake County vote by bus.

"Of course, we had enormous support for our side, but I was shocked to see them there," said Sabatini. "It was old, distorted quotes saying things like 'Charlie was a hateful person,' just really nonsensical stuff that of course was not effective."

Sabatini said he is aware of the other efforts in Florida and elsewhere for similar recognition for Kirk.

"There was an argument that maybe we should wait a while, look at this later. I was like, 'No, I mean, this is the most appropriate response in the aftermath of the horrible tragedy, and significant act of political violence," said Sabatini. "So, we're proud of the vote."
