Massachusetts governor announces initiative despite Trump's federal cuts

One state is looking to give taxpayer money to public universities who had their funding cut by the Trump administration.

The Democratic Governor of Massachusetts Maura Healey announced an initiative recently to help higher education institutions continue research in the state during federal funding cuts.

Healey is proposing legislation that would go along with the DRIVE initiative, which is the Discovery, Research and Innovation for a Vibrant Economy. This proposal would file a total of $400 million in state funding to these institutions.

Brian Camenker is the president of Mass Resistance.

"I guess this is what happens when Communists are running your government," says Camenker.

He commented that this is basically retaliation against President Trump.

Camenker explains that he knows a lot about how programs for grants and research work for hospitals and colleges because he has friends in the field. Therefore, he recognizes that a lot of the research is pretty good stuff.

"… for cystic fibrosis or what have you. But the truth is that it's really this sort of adjunct thing to the hospitals and the universities,” Camenker reveals.

The money is not given to hospitals for treating patients nor to universities for teaching students. He said it is more of a money machine for hospitals and universities.

"I've often questioned the constitutionality of the federal government using its money that way, although that's sort of a different topic. But in any case, taking away the funding should not keep a hospital from treating patients or keep a school from teaching kids," states Camenker.

He pointed out the state leadership has already handed nearly a billion dollars for housing illegal aliens this year. Coupled with this, he commented that there is a reason why people are leaving Massachusetts in droves.
