An evangelist simply must evangelize. That is true of Chen Wensheng, the Chinese national who was released from prison on April 2nd after one year and seven months in prison for sharing his faith.
Chen was formally arrested on October 25, 2023, after being under administrative detention and later criminally detained since August that year. The charges against him were “organizing and funding illegal gatherings” in relation to his street evangelism, which was not surprising since his previous detention stay regarded his plans to share the gospel.
On April 18, 2024, the day of his hearing, Chen was only allowed four members of his family to enter the court room. His trial was highly secured as roadblocks, large numbers of police officers, and other measures kept people from viewing the proceedings. The verdict was delivered on June 20, resulting in his prison sentence that lasted for over a year.
Chen was later released from Deshan Prison and escorted to Hengyang city before reuniting with his wife. Within hours of his release, Todd Nettleton of Voice of the Martyrs says Chen was right back at it.

“He was released from prison last month, and that afternoon he and his wife were out on the streets doing street evangelism in the city where he lives,” Nettleton said.
Nettleton also talked about how Chen is a former drug addict who now has a ministry to others who are captive to that vice.
He expounded, “You would think the Chinese government would give this guy, who is helping drug addicts get clean, a medal, but instead they gave him a 19-month prison sentence.”
It had been made clear that, whether in prison or out, Chen is going to be sharing Christ.
“He actually said he was able to pray with 300 prisoners during his time in prison. He was able to secretly baptize three of them,” Nettleton revealed.
If it's all the same to the Chinese Communists, Chen would rather be preaching from home, but unfortunately, it is not.
“They are so threatened by the name of Jesus, and they are so threatened by the idea that people would follow Jesus, that even helping drug addicts in Jesus’ name is a threat to the communist government,” Nettleton said.
