Lippold: Trump needs to tell public why there is new beat of war drums

With a naval blockade returning, and military airstrikes pounding Iran daily, a national security analyst says President Trump needs to explain the mission and objectives in a conflict that keeps dragging on.

On Wednesday, the fifth day of continuous attacks, U.S. Central Command announced it had conducted a “wave of strikes” against Iran that struck its command centers, air defense sites, and coastal surveillance facilities.

The same announcement said CENTCOM also struck coastal defense and cruise missile sites on Greater Tunb Island, a small but strategic island located near the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz.

The objective of the military strikes is to protect commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz by degrading Iran’s ability to threaten them, CENTCOM said.

The airstrikes and the naval blockade returned after President Trump and his administration worked for weeks to negotiate with Iran’s leaders. Both sides signed an interim deal to end hostilities and kick off negotiations, but the regime attacked commercial vessels with missiles and drones.

“You better make a deal or you're not going to have anything left,” President Trump, speaking to the regime, said Tuesday.

The U.S.-Iran negotiations that appeared to bring an end to hostilities coincided with a drop in U.S. gas prices.

The average national gas price has now jumped by 20 cents over one week to $3.94 for a gallon of unleaded regular, according to AAA.

Kirk Lippold, a retired U.S. Navy commander, told American Family News a majority of the American public supports justifiable military action around the world.

“They just need a really good explanation for it,” he said.

President Trump knows the public is unhappy with rising prices, including gas prices, Lippold said, but the president and his administration are doing a poor job of “articulating” the reason for the ongoing conflict with Iran.

One exception in the administration is Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Lippold said, who is complimented often for his direct and articulate comments to news reporters.
