President Donald Trump plans to travel to China this spring. According to The Washington Stand, the Chinese have made it clear that the future of the island democracy of Taiwan is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations, emphasizing that China "will never allow Taiwan to be separated from China."
Communist dictator Xi Jinping is not happy with Trump’s December announcement of an $11 billion arms sale to Taiwan. In a recent two-hour phone call, Xi told Trump that "The U.S. must handle arms sales to Taiwan with extreme caution."
Gordon Chang is an Asian policy analyst and author of "Plan Red: China's Project to Destroy America." He says that many of China's senior military leaders have been deposed and are under investigation.
"In the most recent round of purges, which was announced on January 24, it took out two officers with operational experience and two officers who had actually fought a war, which is China's 1979 attention of Vietnam,” informs Chang. "So, the Chinese military right now is in disarray, and it doesn't have a leadership, at least for the moment," states Chang.
China began the purge on their top military leaders in 2023. Since then, around 30 generals and admirals have been investigated or expelled, with others having just disappeared. It’s believed by analysts that Xi is removing any ounce of resistance in the military to consolidate his power before invading Taiwan.
Chang also says that China has never attempted a combined air, land, and sea operation, which would be necessary in an invasion of Taiwan.
"This is something which is complex for any military, even one with a lot of experience such as ours. China would be doing something that has never been tried before. I don't think China's military right now is prepared to do that, especially with all of the dismissals of senior officers," concludes Chang.
