Americans' negative view on U.S.-Iran war could hurt Republicans in midterms

A conservative activist is concerned that if the war in Iran is not wrapped up by the November midterms, Republicans are going to get wiped out.

Despite continued reports of military success, pollsters are showing lackluster support for the president's continued waging of the war in Iran. Strength in Numbers listed together all of the polls regarding public perception on the war.

A Fox News/Beacon Research/Shaw and Company survey shows that exactly 50% approve of the Iran war and 50% oppose, but other polls show double digit disapproval numbers. According to the article, “no president in modern polling history has launched a major military operation with the public already against him,” and public support will keep declining the longer the war goes on.

An article from The Hill confirms the assertion, saying that “the general pattern with overseas conflicts is that their popularity ebbs over time.” For example, a Gallop poll looked at public opinion on the Vietnam war, and 24% of Americans believed in 1965 that sending in troops was a mistake while 61% believes it wasn’t. However, the numbers change in 1973 with 60% believing it was a mistake and 29% saying it wasn’t.

Gary Bauer’s “End of the Day Report” informs that the Fox News poll also shows 51% of people believe that the U.S. is less safe because President Donald Trump’s handling of Iran.

Bauer, Gary Bauer

Bauer is the chairman of the Campaign for Working Families and served on the board of Christians United for Israel. He says the U.S. cannot have this conflict still going on in November.

"If the war goes on until November, or anywhere close to November, we're going to get wiped out in the elections. So, God willing, this lasts a few weeks,” says Bauer.

He affirms that the polling data is not good.

“The public, as of now, does not support these actions that the president has taken. There's a battle over in the Middle East, which I have no doubt we will win. But there's a battle within the United States, and the outcome of that is very much in doubt," states Bauer.
