Markell warns U.N.–U.S. Gaza plan is too idealistic, 'recipe for disaster'

The leader of a messianic Jewish ministry is skeptical of the newly approved blueprint to govern Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu applauds the Trump administration's blueprint to secure and govern Gaza, believing the demilitarization, disarmament, and deradicalization will lead to peace and prosperity.

The U.N. Security Council approved the resolution on Monday.

It authorizes an international stabilization force to provide security in Gaza, approves a transitional Board of Peace to be overseen by President Donald Trump, and envisions a possible future path to an independent Palestinian state.

Olive Tree Ministries founder Jan Markell points out that the Hamas terrorist group has already rejected the plan as a foreign instrument of control and should not be expected to cooperate with the Board of Peace, especially in the Middle East, "which is characterized by nothing but war, strife, and turmoil."

"I think this is idealistic," she tells AFN.

The U.S. plan calls for a stabilization force to ensure "the permanent decommissioning of weapons from non-state armed groups," allowing it to use "all necessary measures to carry out its mandate" in compliance with international law.

"And then we throw in the factor of the potential Palestinian state, which will never happen," Markell adds. "I just think this is a recipe for disaster."

She does not expect the plan to work.

The U.N. vote, also welcomed by the Palestinian Authority, followed nearly two weeks of negotiations and pressure on the U.S. to strengthen language about Palestinian self-determination.

The proposal gives no timeline or guarantee for an independent state, only saying it is possible after advances in the reconstruction of Gaza and reforms of the Palestinian Authority.

Netanyahu maintains there cannot be a Palestinian state.
