Deace: America needs the Church to turn a moment into a movement

In a Holy Week message on Palm Sunday, President Donald Trump described America as a "nation of believers." A conservative show host doesn't disagree – but wonders if the Church will pick up its historical banner and lead the nation once again.

Whether the country was founded on Christian principles has become a divided modern-day topic – perhaps more than the Pilgrims, the original English settlers, ever would have thought. But the proof is plain to see, Steve Deace, Blaze Media host, said on American Family Radio Monday.

“Who are the Pilgrims that discovered America, really discovered America? They’re Puritans – I mean, they literally put in the first governing charter in American history, the Mayflower Compact, that they did this for the advancement of the Christian religion,” Deace told show host Jenna Ellis.

In his Truth Social post, Trump wrote of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and of his resurrection.

“As we approach this Joyous Easter Sunday, I want to wish Christians everywhere a Happy and very Blessed Holiday. America is a Nation of Believers. We need God, we want God and, with His help, we will make our Nation Stronger, Safer, Greater, more Prosperous, and more United than ever before. Thank you, and HAPPY EASTER!” he wrote.

Biden’s Easter message

It was a far different presidential sentiment than was expressed a year ago when Joe Biden celebrated Transgender Day of Visibility on Easter Sunday. Transgender proponents argue that their day, established in 2009, is set for March 31 each year, which in 2024 coincided with Easter.

Transgender Day of Visibility was celebrated by Biden each year he was in office, and the former President and avowed Catholic showed no reluctance to honor the trans community on one of the most holy days on the Christian calendar, one that’s been around for some time before 2009.

"The Biden White House has betrayed the central tenet of Easter – which is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Banning sacred truth and tradition – while at the same time proclaiming Easter Sunday as ‘Transgender Day’ – is outrageous and abhorrent. The American people are taking note,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, a devout Christian, wrote on March 30 last year.

Though some dispute the nation’s Christian origins, 12 of the 13 colonies were commissioned originally by some vestige of the Christian church, Deace explained. In fact, the Mayflower Compact, written by the Pilgrims, states the purpose of their decision to begin a new life in a new place.

“Having undertaken, for the Glory of God, and advancements of the Christian faith, and the honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the Northern parts of Virginia; do by these presents, solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one another; covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil body politic,” they wrote.

America’s founding is clear, Deace said.

“There have been books written about [how] the Protestant work ethic built America, books written by people who were not even Christians, but just historians looking at this. So, I mean, this just isn't even in dispute in any way, shape, or form,” he argued.

“The dispute is to what degree” is America a Christian nation, Deace added.

The founders debated this, working to acknowledge God in the birth of the nation, yet to retain some separation, enough that citizens could choose their religion and express it freely.

“Those were healthy disagreements and discussions, and way healthier than the disagreements and discussions we have today, which is how godless shall we be? How perfect is human nature? Those are really destructive debates and discussions and lead to the kind of society, frankly, that we have today,” Deace said.

The Christian vote was key in each of Trump’s presidential elections but especially in his two victories.

Bold Church needed for America’s future

Now, as Trump works to put into play his promises to protect the border and work against the radicalization of gender, he needs more from the Church, according to Deace.

“… The Church is very sick on its own. It doles out spiritual Ritalin,” he said. Too many sermons “talk about health and wealth and well-manicured lawns and Jeremiah 29:11, taken totally and completely out of context.

“This moment we’re having right now cannot be a movement without the Church. We have the Church at the forefront of American liberty. It’s the only time the Church ever led,” Deace exclaimed.

And that, he pointed out, was because of the foresight of the Founders. “The Founders realized, ‘Well, we can't do liberty by law. We have to do liberty by the ultimate law giver, liberty under God.’ That’s why it’s worked here longer than anyplace else.

“But without the Church leading the way, this can’t go on,” Deace said.
