Tennessee appeals court says school shooter's writings can be made public

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee appeals court has ruled that the writings of a shooter who killed six people at the Covenant School in Nashville can be made available to the public.

The ruling overturns much of a 2024 opinion by a lower court.

A group of Covenant parents has been fighting to keep police from releasing records of the shooting out of fear that they will further traumatize their children and could inspire copycat attacks.

The appeals court says that a school security exception to the Tennessee Public Records Act doesn't prevent their release.

It also states that copyright law doesn't prevent police from releasing the public's access to the shooter's writings.
